THE TEAM
Nine students formed the production unit for "Homeless in the
Heartland." They each brought their unique skills to the show, and in
the end, created one of the most memorable projects ever produced by
Hillcrest broadcast journalism students.
Moving left to right in the photo, here is a little more information
about each...
Kara Mullen, Junior, Photographer
She's a talented photographer who also found herself filling in as a
reporter during the first HTV visit to the Rare Breed outreach center.
Kara conducted all but one of the interviews that day, and collected
memorable moments from her subjects. Her ability to sub for others
who had conflicts or illness during the three-month shoot set the tone
for the staff as they pulled together time and again.
Ryan Lindsey, Senior, Photographer
Ryan is the line producer of HTV Magazine and has reported, shot, and
edited plenty during his years on staff. He filled in as a reporter
as well on the special edition, conducting the interview with HHS
Coordinator of Interventions Melissa Allen, highlighting the way
Hillcrest is working to assist homeless students.
Kaley Prier, Senior, Executive Producer
The person who was familiar with every second of video shot by the
team for this show, and the person who kept the vision for the project
in the forefront at all times...Kaley worked tirelessly on Homeless in
the Heartland, and it paid off. She helped figure out solutions to
many visual challenges faced by the team, and made sure the momentum
was not lost during the long production process.
Caleb Brown, Senior, Photographer
Caleb was a total team player who was there whenever called upon to
shoot interviews, downtown b-roll, night-time footage, and other
visuals that popped up during the production process. He also shot
all of the formal interviews at the Rare Breed that led to some of the
show's most compelling content.
Savanna Steffen, Junior, Reporter
She will be remembered for a "first" in the 24-year history of HTV
Magazine. Savanna was the lone reporter for a full broadcast, a full
special edition that required tons of voiceover work, challenging
studio interviews, and other on-camera chores. Her professional
approach and interest in the issue are apparent each step of the way.
John Harmon, Junior, Photographer
Some of the most memorable shots from around the city of Springfield
were John's work, and he also gathered most of the b-roll inside and
outside the Rare Breed during the long shoot there. During
post-production, he took on the color correction duties in the final
hours before the show wrapped. John is HTV's Chief Engineer.
Kelsey Williams, Junior, Photographer/Anchor
During most of the production schedule, Kelsey was shooting b-roll and
interviews. She also conducted a key interview with a representative
from Goodwill, the only adult down town who would go on-camera to
discuss the homeless issue. She only learned she would be the show's
anchor two weeks before the wrap-arounds were shot, and then she had
to bundle up and do each from memory--no teleprompter.
Cody House, Junior, Webmaster
Cody was involved in the planning of the show, and in the planning of
this website, which he created. The site is a crucial part of the
"Homeless in the Heartland" project, providing extra information and
bonus footage that help round out coverage of the topic. His vision
for this site will influence future multi-media efforts by HTV in the
future.
Breanna Feemster, Senior, Photographer
The HTV News Director was a key photographer for the special edition,
shooting a ton of footage in the down town area, including cold
weather homeless camps in some not-so-nice areas. Breanna also shot
interviews in studio and found creative ways to make simple images
more interesting, helping establish the look of the final program.
